There are many factors to consider when you need a building job done in Brittany France. Please do not expect it to be the same as taking on a builder in the UK.
It is always the best advice to use only qualified fully registered and insured builders or building companies to carry out any work on your property.
You may be struggling to understand the correct way to go about getting some quotations, and then how to engage somebody's services for renovations at your recently purchased home in Brittany, Normandy, Loire or any other region of France.
There have been such a assortment of so called builders turning up, who when you question them closely have turned out to be mechanics, or butchers really, and they have stated different things about the "right way to do things" - so you can end up getting more and more confused.
A devis is a fixed-price contract, not an estimate. Unless covered by some clause in the devis, or on your instructions, the Artisan can only charge you what it says on the devis.
The devis must (if over 150€) list all materials - priced - and labour for the job. It should include a start time and approx length of the work. It must include payment terms.
Please remember if you sign a devis (quote/contract), then it is an enforceable contract. Don't use an Artisan who isn't registered for all the jobs he/she is offering. So if he is a builder and says he can do your plumbing make sure that plumbing is included on his insurance. Look at the insurance and registration details before you sign. Check out some of the references. Don’t you buy the materials yourself, your builder can get them cheaper for you and it will cost you more in the long run i.e. when you sell your house etc.
It is best to have the devi in French and English.
Please remember it is illegal to employ anyone that isn’t registered and they usually come down harder on the person employing the builder than the worker himself. We try our best to advertise registered builders on our website but it’s up to you to check their registration details and their insurance which is called Decennale insurance in France.
